Mappy (part of the Namco Classics Vol. 1 PCB)

  • Display: Vertical (upright)
  • Players: 2 (alternating)
  • Game 6 of 7 on a multi-game PCB (Namco Classics Vol. 1)
  • Mappy was another game I had never seen until I began collecting video games. This game really cracked me up when I first saw it. It's a little elephant who appears to be a cop. He has a night-stick, but can't seem to use it against the baddies. His job appears to be to steal all the artwork and valueables in the level without being caught by the baddies. HA! Something seems backwards here. The pink cats just run around trying to tag you, while the red thing (fox?) sneaks around and occasionally hides behind objects and then jumps out at you. There are trampolines which can be used to jump to different floors of the building, and as long as you're bouncing, you're invincible. But bounce too many times and the trampoline will break under your weight. Every few levels, there is an intermission level where you must pop all the baloons before time runs out. This is definitely a fun game.

Mappy ARRANGEMENT (part of the Namco Classics Vol. 1 PCB)

  • Display: Vertical (upright)
  • Players: 2 (simultaneous-competitive / split-screen)
  • Game 7 of 7 on a multi-game PCB (Namco Classics Vol. 1)
  • After playing Mappy, I wondered how they could improve such a game. Well, they made it 2-player simultaneous instead of alternating play! They improved the graphics a bunch, and added variety on levels by changing the artwork completely. The game feels a bit pinched vertically though, but that's due to the split-screen feature. The objective in 2-player mode is to collect more stuff than your opponent, while stay alive longer too :-)
