Xevious (part of the Namco Classics Vol. 1 PCB)

  • Display: Vertical (upright)
  • Players: 2 (alternating)
  • Game 3 of 7 on a multi-game PCB (Namco Classics Vol. 1)
  • This, I'm afraid, is not my most favourite game. It is, infact, ranked very low. I never encountered this game in the arcade before, and I guess because of that, the nostalgia factor just isn't there. I find the graphics rough to marginally ok, and the flight-paths and actions of the enemies pretty boring. Most of all, however, it is the repetitive, tweety music which just drives me up the wall. Sorry, this game isn't for me. I own it only because it's part of a multi-game PCB which has several other great games. I understand that Xevious is considered a classic in-part because it was one of the first vertical shooters made. Well, it sure plays like it. All in all, I find the game too dificult, and with little or no visual pay-off for progressing in the game. No new enemies, and the terrain doesn't really change all that much.

Super Xevious (part of the Namco Classics Vol. 1 PCB)

  • Display: Vertical (upright)
  • Players: 2 (alternating)
  • Game 4 of 7 on a multi-game PCB (Namco Classics Vol. 1)
  • Seeing as I did't like Xevious, I wasn't likely to like Super Xevious either. Sure enough, after trying this one out, I wasn't into it either.

Xevious ARRANGEMENT (part of the Namco Classics Vol. 1 PCB)

  • Display: Vertical (upright)
  • Players: 2 (alternating)
  • Game 5 of 7 on a multi-game PCB (Namco Classics Vol. 1)
  • Well, I was hoping they would improve Xevious as much as they improved Galaga as far as the Arrangement versions go. I gave it a try, and have to say no, they didn't :-( Although they have improved the graphics a bit, as well as replacing that annoying music with something better, the changes were not enough to save it for me. The gameplay seems almost exactly the same as the original. It's too bad, there was a huge opportunity here to give Xevious some of the better attributes of the other shooters which have come out since Xevious was initialy created.
