Quick Description
BoulderSmash is a variant of a phenominally popular game I first encountered on the C64.
(See a screenshot of it in my top-10 C64 games page!)
In the game, you are a little guy that digs tunnels in the earth, and collects gems on
the way. When you have collected enough gems, the exit is unlocked and you can proceed
to the next level. Gems and Boulders obey the laws of gravity, while most other objects
(including yourself) do not. You can not be struck on the head by a falling objects, or you
loose your life. You are awarded an extra life every 500 points.
There are two types of enemies. Contact is always fatal.
Scoreboard Description
AA*BB CC DDD EEEEE (see one of the screenshots above to understand this)
AA = # of gems which must be collected (2 digits)
* = A small gem used as a visual separator
BB = points per gem (may increase for extra gems)
CC = # of gems collected so far
DDD = Time remaining (press the left SoftKey when you run out of time)
EEEEE = Score (free man every 500 pts)
Between every 3rd and 4th levels is a small intermission level. You are presented a task to complete
in a very short amount of time. *IF* you accomplish the task and exit the level before
time runs out, you are awarded a free man.
Use the Right-SoftKey to kill yourself if you get trapped (yes, it costs a life too! :-)
The Left SoftKey can be used to restart the level after you run out of time).
The MENU key can be used to abort the current game, or see a small help screen.
The Display key can be used to toggle gameplay in a large or small view.
I will not say more about the gameplay, or it will give-away elements of the game which are fun to learn on your own.
NOTE: This variant has a few differences over the original game: In addition to the
typical gameplay-objects, it includes keys&doors, an extra kind of expanding wall, and bombs.
Installation
To install the game, extract the files from the .ZIP file onto your computer. Connect your
Digital Camera (Kodak DC290 only is supported), and open an explorer window (I'm assuming you're
using "Windows". Browse to your camera (it should be listed under "My Computer").
Copy everything you find in the zip into the system directory on your camera.
That should be one .CAM file, and one directory containing .raw and .bmp files).
NOTE: You MUST also download a level-set to use with the game too!
Put all the .map files from the .zip into your system/boulders directory (in with the .raw and .bmp files).
You can install only one level-set at a time. To install a new level-set, delete the existing .map files
and put new ones in their place.
NOTE: You can disable sound support simply by deleting the .raw files under the directory system/boulders/
Running the game
Switch your camera to REVIEW mode. Scroll all the way to the right-most page in the menus. You should
see "Boulders.cam" listed there. Select it, and your camera will automatically shut-off. When you turn the
power back on, the game will boot (it takes about 5 seconds). To return to the cameras' normal operation,
cycle the power again.
Features
- Full sound-effects!!! (first program for the '290 I've written which supports audio)
- Make your own Artwork, Levels, and Sound Effects! (see docs included in download)
- Toggle large/small display with the 'Display' button!
- Play the game on either your TV, or your LCD display!
- It's Free!
Bugs/Problems
- When writing this game, I attempted to stay true to the classic game, however,
there are minor differences, and some levels may be unsolvable (but not the 'classic'
level-set, I know all those are solvable). Other levels, especially those found on the 'net,
*might* not be solvable.
